*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

That's the most ridiculous piece of garbage journalism I've seen in a long time!

They're comparing the manufacturing cost to a theoretical $199 purchase price which is only available on contracts which subsidise the cost of the phone. What that figure has to do with the real, non-subsidised, outright purchase price of an iPhone is beyond me

EDIT: Just been reading all the vitriol that was posted in the comments back when this article was first published. Just confirms what a complete joke Gizmodo is and that they employ clueless morons to write their articles.

Think I'll be taking advantage of the Vodafone 4G promise if it's going to be 4G compatible, then apply the work discount and hello 5S.

Just a heads up for anyone looking to use recycling websites to get rid of their old iPhones, the price, especially on a 5 is dropping quite a lot. Was £320 at the start of the week for the 5 32GB when I did it, is now £280. Probably drop a lot more on Tuesday too

You can put it on now, and then they hold the price for 14 days so you don't have to ship it off straight away :)

This really bemuses me when I read American articles or reviews about phones.

They persistently say things like 'cheap at $199' or 'the hardware isn't worth $199'. It's like they believe that $199 is the actual cost of the phone, rather than the result of some negotiation between manufacturer and carrier about contract prices. You can get an iPhone for no upfront charge if you take out a sufficiently expensive contract, but it doesn't mean you're getting the phone for free!

Just one of the many things about the US cellphone market which makes no sense to me.

So am I right in thinking that with the exception of the flash on the back, the 5S chassis is the same as the current 5?

Meaning a lot of the 5 cases will fit anyway?

My 4 is still going strong although showing it's age. I'll be interested to see what the 5C price is.

Buying the phone outright and going on Giffgaff is still cheaper.

O2's cheapest Airtime Plans are £12 or £17, whereas you can get a similar Giffgaff plan (if not better) for £10.00

Plus with O2 Refresh to get a new phone you still have to pay off your Phone Plan. There is no plus here. By doing this I would be paying an extra £7 per month for 24 months = a loss of £168.00

I would only consider this if they sold me the phone £168.00 cheaper.

Edit: and then there is the unlock fee you would have to pay if you wanted to sell the phone on to someone on another network which would probably be another £20.00

If you have £600 odd pounds spare for this method.

Might upgrade my 4S is a year old now and the battery runs down quick...

The 12 months free credit with my supermarket visa card will help the payments. No chance of getting it in my local supermarket on release though.

announcement is due for tomorrow.

Based on a lack of other key leaks I would assume the launch of the device is a few weeks later for the 5S. The 5C might be good to go straight away.

Also iOS7GM hasn't hit yet so nothing will launch for at LEAST a week anyway.

5c actual looks really nice in blue, and the OS looks super smooth. If it comes in at an ok price it could really shake things up.

It certainly doesn't look bad, if they can price it around the mid-range Android phones then it'll no doubt be a big hit.

In doing so they have to maintain the Apple premium 'feel' though, to make sure they don't cheapen the brand. This will be the hardest thing, but there's no reason they can't pull it off.
