Just checking before I go away, what's the charges for iPhone 3G when abroad?

My understanding is:
  • Sending a text when abroad counts as 4 from the allowance. (Receiving is Free)
  • Calls are charged (Receiving a call from the UK is also charged)
  • 3G/EDGE/GPRS Data is charged
  • WiFi is Free (along as I can find one!)

That all correct?

Also, so that I'm not charged for data, how do I stop it downloading my emails/facebook/app updates etc?

Turn off Data Roaming in settings, should avoid charges.

Not sure on the rest as I don't have a legit iPhone contract.

Just read http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI...0000001959097885,K=5506,Sxi=10,Case=obj(18471)

Will I be charged for someone leaving me a voicemail message when I am abroad? said:
If you are abroad when the call is diverted to Voicemail on no answer or busy, the caller is charged for a UK deposit call and you will be charged for a UK to roaming call and a roaming call to voicemail (this is as per 901). If the call is diverted to voicemail on unreachable, the caller is charged for a UK deposit call and you are not charged.

Note: If you do not wish to receive these charges we recommend that the Voicemail divert is disabled before leaving the UK.
To switch Voicemail divert off dial 1760. To then switch it back on when you are back in the UK dial 1750.

So in English thats saying:
  • If a call gets puts through to my voicemail because I didn't answer it or I clicked 'busy, I will be charged for a UK to roaming call and a roaming call to voicemail (whatever amount that is).
  • If a call gets puts through to my voicemail because I didn't have signal, I'm not charged.
  • Dialing 1760 disables my voicemail = People can't leave messages = I wont be charged for people leaving messages
  • Dialing 1750 re-enables my voicemail.

That right?

[I'm just afraid of all these extra charges as I'm 17 so it's my first contact and because I'm not 18 it had to be in parents name etc.)

(Not sure how you do this on iPhone, but it applies to phones in general)

You also don't get charged for calls put through to voicemail, if you choose on your handset "divert all calls to voicemail". Then the call never reaches the handset, and you only pay when/if you retrieve the voicemail.

I just cancel all diverts when I'm abroad so voicemail isn't used and isn't an issue

Enter ##002# and then hit send on your phone
Thanks. I've done the dial 1760 and now the ##002# (that came up with stuff saying what it had turned off).

Once I'm back in the country, dialing 1750 undo's what 1760 did, but how do I re-enable what ##002# did?
