iPhone and updating issues - bloody thing wont update (2.2.1)

How can i get it to update, it just freezes wen doing the backup, it dosnt go any firther, makes out like its moving but gets to a point and just dosnt want to go further, how can i get this to work?

Any help will be gratefully appreciated because i aint been able to update it since around Nov time if not before.

I lost all my data, finally got the backup from iTuns but itw as partial, well, it was synced last sometime early Jan so its missing a bit off, be orite though i sorted it out.
