As per the title really. What I want to be able to do is have the iPhone switch off at a certain time of night and switch back on again at a certain time in the morning.

I can do this with my Blackberry (which helps to preserve precious battery life!).

Any ideas?

Darn - Seems a bit of an oversight if you ask me.

Seems like it would be a good way to further extend battery life (especially as for iPhones, that is not exactly something they have in spades!).

(Just to detail what's possible) If I turn my N95 8GB off at night then the alarm will still come on in the morning, and the phone will ask if I want to turn it properly on or not.

Might try to see if there's an auto-off feature...

To be honest I have never owned a phone which does do that, i know that some will set their alarms off even when switched off but only through a low power mode, what your asking for is ok but I would have no use nor probably most people who charge their phones over night so its sitting on power in standby mode.

Edited: Sleep mode to Standby mode

Not normally a problem with phones that have a good few days battery life, but with the iPhone, it is a bit limited (battery wise...well mine is) and especially as I use it so much would be good to preserve power when it is not needed (i.e. I am in bed asleep).

As I say it really makes a difference on the blackberry. You are right though, it does make sense to charge the phone every night (largely because you have to), but there are times when you don't have the wherewithal or just forget...if (by auto-off and auto-on) it prolonged life an extra 5 hours I can't see how that would be a bad thing.

...even good for the environment too...saving those extra few pennies worth of leccy, and if lots of people did it, maybe a few trees too. :)

Battery usage overnight is negligible anyway. Esp if you dont have push, pull or wireless enabled.

If you want easy power saving then turn on airline mode, its pretty much off then!

Yeah, I know I can work round it (and most do). I could even manually switch it off and on. Its just that this is the whole point, it requires manual interaction, which requires me to remember to charge it/turn it off/on etc.

Now I am not the worlds most organised person it has to be said, and therefore I was hoping there was a more intelligent way to do ot ala my works Blackberry.

Oh well, looks like it can't be done for now, will keep fingers crossed for a future upgrade that addresses this.

Thanks for confirming this one and all, if nothing else it allows me to cross that one off the list of things to try and work out (for now).

I just dock mine overnight, it still charges with the voltage USB standby provides (although no on screen battery), just very slowly.

Be nice to have a swipe function that sets the phone straight into airplane mode like 2 down then one across :) or user definable.

I have this feature on my jailbroken iPhone with SBSettings and it's really handy. Just swipe the top status bar and press a button, I also have a toggle for Wifi and the tilt sensor (really handy for single handed iPod use). Would be nice if Apple included something like this by default as it takes ages to load the settings app and navigate to the correct settings in the menus.
