iPhone capacity - What is "other"?

Just wondering as my 16 gb iphone 4 currently has no media on it. Just 0.9 gb of photos and 0.62 gb of apps. And yet 2.2 gb is taken up by "other". Just what is taking up this 2.2 gb?

OS stuff I guess mainly, then user data (text messages, preferences, email, documents etc).

Well I'm pretty sure I don't have anywhere near 2.2 gb of texts, email etc. Is "other" the same size for everyone else?

Got an update.

Found this thread: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7598213

I did a backup and restore. Afterwards "other" has gone right down to 0.23gb
