iPhone Charging Woes

Well, as thread title. My iPhone 3G is having problems charging both through the power adapter and through the USB cable when connected to a computer. I've only got 1 power adapter but I have 3 of the USB cables that come with iPods. Plugging into the wall with the power adapter does absolutely nothing, no message on the screen saying it's charging and no lightning bolt through the battery indicator either. I thought this could be a problem with the power adapter so I tried plugging into a Windows PC with a USB cable and nothing showed, I tried a different USB port and again, the computer didn't even pick up something had been plugged in, iTunes didn't open and the phone made no attempt to show that it was charging either.

I then tried a different cable thinking it may have been the cable at fault so I tried a second cable, and plugged it this time into my MacBook when I got the following message upon plugging in:

I've never seen this message before so I'm unsure of what to do next. In regards to the phone it's self I've tried a soft reset and I've tried blowing into the bottom of the phone to get any dust that may be on the connectors there but no luck so far. I was thinking of restoring the phone as a last resort but I can't do that unless the phone is recognised by iTunes and seeing as it isn't even being detected in the Windows PC and I'm getting this above message when plugged into a Mac I have absolutely no idea what to do now.

 :(

EDIT: This may be better in the hardware thread but as I didn't know wether the problem was hardware or software based I just took a punt.

Nothing at all. I've just tested an iPod Nano in the wall charger and that seems to charge quite happily so I'm guessing I can eliminate the plugs and cables as a factor in this problem.

Some of the pins in the dock connector be damaged or bent.

Negative, the phone has never been mistreated, dropped, taken into areas with steam such as a bathroom etc I think you get the picture. I'm looking now and I can't see any broken pins and I'm fairly surely that unless that is a design fault or a known issue then I won't have broken pins, I don't treat the iPhone in such a way for something like that to happen. :)

Any other ideas?

EDIT: Judging by the fact that the cables work with other devices, namely iPod's and I can't get neither a PC nor a Mac to detect the iPhone I think it's best if I just take it to the Apple store in Cardiff. What would you guys recommend, do I phone the store in advance and explain my problem, or do I just turn up unnanounced and ask if they can take a look there and then? I'd rather only have to make the one trip as unless you Park & Ride the city is a pain in the ass to park cheaply in.
