¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Awhile back I configured my iPhone running iOS 4.3.3 so that it added all my contacts on google to my address book

Now this worked, it was just a case of adding a server as an exchange server set to m.google.com

The only problem is that whenever I add a new contact using my iPhone it does not add the contact to google contacts

Is there any way I can do this?

I need to backup and upgrade my phone to ios 5 so ideally I'd like to have all my contacts in google contacts before doing a restore to factory settings

I never had this problem myself when using google as my contact sync, it just picked up automatically. tried turning contacts off and on under the account in settings? Should hopefully then sync across your latest set

Are you sure you're adding it to the right address book?

The iPhone has at least 2, one for your Synced google contacts and one that's just on the Phone.

I remember there being a setting to change where they are added by default but it seems to have disappeared on iOS 5. Have a look in the Contacts section and and press the back button in the top left corner to see the different groups and see which your new ones are in.
