hi,

i am trying to sync my contacts to gmail from my iphone. however when i set this up in itunes it tries to sync my empty address book on gmail to my iphone hence wiping all my contacts.

can anyone shed some light on how i get my contacts to sync the other way. i then want to enable over the air sync.

thanks in advance

g

I'm not 100% sure as I use mobileme but (and don't quote me on this) I think you need to enable gmail as a push account on your iPhone. See here. So that way you sync over the air rather than through iTunes.

i tried that... but it would not sync my existing contacts. only new ones that i added. i could add a new contact and it appeared on gmail almost instantly.

but all my 400 or so existing contacts didnt sync.

There probably is a way of making it sync your old contacts over the air but this might be a workaround in the meantime.

yeah i think i need to import all my existing contacts into gmail first...

thanks

will give that a go.

:)

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

But yeah if you import all the existing ones then you can sync all new ones automatically over the air.

i'm a mobileme user but spent a few months trying to get mobileme/gmail in sync for contacts.

I think what you need to do is this:

1. Don't setup the contact syncing through itunes
2. Setup your gmail account as an exchange email on the iphone
3. Set it to sync contacts and then it should sync everything off iphone onto gmail contacts.
