Iphone, Desire HD or Galaxy

To be honest, it's really no point asking about iphone here :p
I'm an Android user and I'll say go for iPhone based on YOUR requirements. I think people get the wrong impression of Android in the sense that you have mess about with it or be a nerd to function or something :D. You can if you want to...but one can just use it right out of the box.

I like how all the people suggesting iPhones aren't actually giving a reason for that related to what he requires :p.

The DHD is better for music (drag and drop OR iTunes, music player widgets, FLAC support etc), better for movies (drag and drop OR iTunes, larger screen, native divx support, multiple batteries for prolonged viewing) and a higher MP camera. The other required features (Wifi, GPS) are much about nothing, even though you get free turn-by-turn satnav with the DHD.

I don't want to start another Apple debate but can one of you iPhone suggesters say WHY you're suggesting the iPhone, rather than just a one sentence answer?

DHD - Big screen, fast, Sense UI. Poor battery, poor volume on ringtones. Camera nothing special.

SGS - Great screen SuperAMOLED. Decent battery life, gorrilla glass, good sound quality through speakers and headphones. Poor GPS, UI stutters sometimes. No flash on camera.

Iphone - Nice build and looks, UI that just works. poor sound quality through headphones. Have to use itunes! Boring.

I perfer SGS however Id be totally happy with the DHD also. I chose SGS as I need a loud ringtone for work!

I would only recommend the iphone if requirements were lots of gaming, there's no disputing that iphone has more games and much more high quality games.

SGS and DHD are great and there's some fantastic media software out there now mainly poweramp, it is in my opinion much better than anything available on any mobile platform, even the iphone.

I own a DHD and I love it, super fast and smooth, the SGS is level pegging all round, but you may be disappointed with the DHD's battery life, it suits me pretty fine because I'm rarely away from a charger for long enough for it to be a problem, but if you are regularly needing more than 16 - 24 hours of use between charge you might want to go for a different device, I hear the SGS battery life is better.

All round though, the reason I chose the DHD and without mincing words is because how awesome it is to hold such a sturdy, thin device with such a large screen. I found out about the really good specs after I had bought it. The DHD does really feel nice and the screen is great the only real criticism I would give is to the speaker, it's a little on the quiet side, it doesn't really cause me problems but I'm often thinking it should be a little louder.

I use my phone as I suspect many into gadgets do and my Samsung Galaxy S needs runs out of battery after about 18 hours.

Not a problem but I'd say all these high end smart phones are likely to have poor battery life.

Annoying as my old SE Ksomething-or-other-i would do 3-4 days without a charge.

I've purchased a car charger and extra mains charger off of Amazon for a few pounds delivered and make sure I just constantly top up the battery whenever I'm not planning to use the phone for an hour or so.

I got my SGS for £12.50 per month with unlimited texts, 500mb data and about 200 minutes and the phone free. iPhone was something like £35 and the DHD wasn't much cheaper. For nearly 1/3rd of the price I couldn't say no.

Pretty much agree with all of this.

Yes the iPhone has some great apps but the chances are you will only ever see about 5% of them. It all comes down to your needs, there are PLENTY of excellent apps for Android it just fails in comparison to the iPhone when it comes to gaming.

Can the DHD connect to the iTunes store and download podcasts?

Did the OP list that as one of his requirements? No.

But yes, you can sync with iTunes so everything you can download/do on iTunes you can put on the DHD. A la:

Well, I know you're biased because of your android sig and you are starting a debate by asking and I'm responding :p
Sure Desire HD might be a better phone and is better for xyz (I'd personally get the DHD) but sometimes a "basic" dumbed down phone(nothing wrong with that) is a better choice for some people.

iPhone does have a better battery life and he will be watching movies and listening to music. Honestly, who carries multiple batteries?

Duz iPhonze haz tegrazone?? ;):D:p

(and most seem to be ported over quite quickly now)

+1

He listed 'music' as one of his requirements, and the ability to download podcasts directly from itunes without having to connect the phone to a PC or Mac is a great feature if you listen to a lot of music, like so:

If this is also possible on Android handsets then that's good, as I'm always keeping an eye out of iPhone 4 alternatives...

Still sync with iTunes is a nice feature, as many podcasts are only on iTunes it seems...

I never carry a spare mobile phone battery, however I sometimes carry a battery based USB charger, which allows me to keep my iPhone charged while away from power points for around 1 week or so...

My missus was of this opinion but she ended up getting a Desire and she loves it now! Shes one of the least technically minded people I know and shes never had a problem with it! :)

I'm in a similar boat to the OP, my contract is up at the end of the month and I can get a new phone to replace my Hero.. I was going to go for the Desire HD but a few people have said wait for the new Android phones coming out soon!

Google Listen can manage and download podcasts?

This is what I use :)

It syncs with your Gmail acount too. If you go into Google Reader in Gmail, there's a Listen subfolder with all of your podcasts you've subscribed too.

Means I can keep up to date with my podcasts and rss feeds when on my phone or desktop.

The price you will pay will probably influence your final choice as they are all decent phones

If it was the same cost for each, then it would probably be between the Desire and iphone. Personally I wouldn't say the iphone was worth a price premium over the Desire.

Any smartphone you intend to use regularly will probably need a daily charge. Heavy use on any of them (hours of gaming, wifi, gps etc) will potentially use up the battery in less than a day. Plenty of people complain about battery life on all 3 of these phones.

If you have patience it might be worth waiting for the announcements of the next batch of phones over the next month or two.

I have experience with both SGS and Iphone (my daughters) plus I have an IPOD Touch

for music,

The Iphone is an IPOD Touch with a phone built in it and so by default is an excellent music player however the SGS with Poweramp is superb.
I'll make the assumption that you have no problem with what music you want to put on it and so aren't really bothered with linking up to Itunes..

movies on planes etc.

Everything on the Iphone has to be converted where the SGS plays virtually anything including MKV.
Both look good but the SGS is better.

wifi access where available

No problem with both

GPS system ocasionally...

Iphone very good but I have the odd minor errors with the SGS.
Every now and then it will lose signal and your marker will be 50 yards from where it should be but your route is still showing.
This only happens every now and then and it's got me everywhere I want to go.

Now im not one for fiddling much to get things working...i just want to get some nice apps etc and use for the above, which is probably why my thinking of Iphone is best for me. I seem to read a lot of tinkering is required soemtimes for android phones..maybe not though?

Definitely not, in fact I would say Android is a lot easier.
I normally download my own APK's and using Astro File Manager I install them.
If not I just press the Market icon on the phone and it downloads and installs.
With the Iphone you do have to mess about a bit more.

Also like to add that my amazing jailbroken IPOD Touch has now become redundant.
