I have one of these Apple AV adapters -

I have connected this to my TV and changed the input and it display my phone, youtube etc all good.
When I connect the HDMI to my graphics card HDMI out, a display device does appear on screen resolution however its a VGA device and it looks like its trying to output the display to the phone not the other way around.
How do I switch to output phone display on PC? (not PC display on phone)

edit - Just had a thought, would I need to have HDMI input on my monitor for this to work?
