iphone down to £169

Quick question:

Once unlocked, the iPhone will work with Orange PAYG. Correct?

I'm sure it will, but it can't hurt to make sure. :)

Yes - you need an email service with an SMTP server that supports authentication. ntlworld might, but I don't know. Most paid-for pop3/imap services come with one. You could pay for an smtp only service with someone if it doesn't, i suppose.

Thanks csmager.

Does anyone know if NTLworld supports SMTP authentication?

OK after being away all weekend and just having a play with the phone and iTunes (PC) I have a Q about importing/syncing photos with the iPhone.

On the Photos tab in iTunes you can select a folder to sync and then check or uncheck various folders which are directly within that folder, however there doesnt appear to be a way of drilling further down into any other subfolders. If I try and manually select a folder on its own to sync iTunes then goes and removes all other imported photos from previous syncs, rather than just add these pics.

Is this just iTunes being crap or me being thick? If its iTunes then I guess that ftp/ssh will allow me to add pics that way but obviously not sync (not a real problem really).

Cheers :)

Still enjoying the phone, but not really had a chance to have a real play since I have been away for a bit.

So heres the problem...

If I setup my NTLWorld details with NTLWorld SMTP I can send emails via those settings.

However as soon as I jump onto the O2 EDGE/GPRS network, Im not able to send emails.

I.e. I have to use the O2 SMTP server... surely there is a way around this?

If you get a google account, you can use google's SMTP server for your NTL account, since it supports authentication. Downside is that sent messages will appear as if sent from your google address. These days though I've found people pay much more attention to the sender's name, which you have full control over, than they do the email account it came from.

Hmm I see.

So if i were to use Googles SMTP authentication server for sending, they would appear as "[email protected]" but with your name?

(I thought you can specify the reply to email address though in some cases? or does that not apply when you use smtp authentication?)

I dont think the iPhone email client supports the reply:to function, but what you say about using the google server is correct. What I've done with an old pop-only account is have google fetch that email so ALL my mails are in 1 account I can access with imap. You can add the ability to send mail from that account into the gmail interface, so if you despatately need an email to come from that account, you can log into the web interface.

Hmm pants.

So if I replied to an email that was sent through the Gmail SMTP server it will effectively come from "[email protected]" and not "[email protected]" despite using the Ntlworld pop server to receive the email?

That's what you get for using a PC. :p On the Mac in integrates with iPhoto and is a dream to use but not so much on the PC.

Back when I had an iPod but no Mac (I.e. I had to use my PC) I just copied the who photo library over and left it at that. Sucks but at least I had my photos with me...

damn, thats a bit rubbish then, and dont think I want to sync all of my pics etc as its close to 100GB and dont think it could convert all that to fit :D I just dislike the way its completely inflexible about changing folders and needing to remove the old images first.

One alternative would just be to leave that account set up on your phone with the o2 SMTP server, so you know you can send an email when out? Presumably when youre at home, you send emails using your computer? This is how I've set up an imap account of mine that doesnt have a dedicated SMTP server.

The supplied headphones I have are faulty. The only way to get sound out of the right bud is to push the cable up into headphone. Will I be able to just get a replacement set of headphones from O2 or will I have to return the whole lot (ie phone as well).
