Iphone failed update

Phone is just frozen. The screen shows the white usb icon and cd with Itunes only. What can I do about this? Thank you.

It was and is already plugged in whilst trying to do the update. Can you update it without it being plugged in?
Edit: just had to reboot to get a response for "preparing Iphone for restore" so hopefully I will make some progress with this.
Edit: Yes in deed. No problems sorted.
