Hi.
Im going america in about 2 months time on holiday.
Apart from the usual guff like clothing, i cant think of much to buy myself.
Apart from an iPhone 3g.

Q: Can they be bought without a contract, and if so, how would i go about using it over here?

No, not in the US. You must sign up for a 24 month contract.

If you did manage to get one abroad, you'd need to get it unlocked. I might be wrong but I believe the 3G iPhone currently needs a hardware-based solution (i.e. a special SIM) to unlock it.
