iPhone having a problem receiving calls/texts

Sometimes I receive them, and sometimes I don't, with no indication of a missed call or anything. According to my mates, it goes straight to my answer phone, even if my phone is turned on.

Same with texts, I'll receive them straight away sometimes, and then other times they'll be 8 hours late or more.

What is going on?

That is no one has ever said to me that they tried to phone and they got the answer phone...

Sometimes I just randomly get voicemails asking why I never pick up.
