hi

after buying an iphone 3g off ebay quite some time ago and using it since then in jailbroken form without any problems untill more recently when a while ago the screen went black after the battery died and refused to boot up after being charged etc but when plugged into a pc itunes said it was in recovery mode. However the phone would only get to about 60% progress showing on the phones screen and then freeze. i repeatedly tried restoring the phone untill eventually it did take the firmware.
the phone then worked fine but would randomly gointo the above state if it crashed or you ever let the battery runout or turned it off.
this has happened again last week with the same symptoms, black screen, itunes saying its in recovery mode, odd time it will show a white screen or even more rare it will show the connect to itunes picture but will not take the firmware nomatter what one i try from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1

question is what would happen if i took it to an apple store?
i know the out of warranty thing is around £150 would they look at the phone and replace it like for like with another 3g?
the phone does have the crack from the dock connector up the back but again it is way out of warranty to be covered by this flaw and the volume button has fell out as the casing broke around that area as well.

any help / opinions appreciated!

I recently took my 3GS in when I smashed the screen. The guy checked the serial number (for warranty purposes, I assume) and commented that I'd had the phone a long time. I said it was second hand, and I could see the shift in body language immediately. He said it was £80 for a fix, and his tone of voice suggested there was no hope of any freebies with a second hand phone.

YMMV, but that's how it went for me...
