iPhone... It's been unlocked

If the unlock software proves to be an easy-to-do thing then i might consider buying an iPhone, however it might be too-little-too-late if they're coming out in a few weeks.

Main reason I need an unlocked one is because I have a contract that won't be up for another 12months, and my home broadband is tied to it.

Cancelling it would mean paying the contract provider to terminate early, and I've have to switch ISP :(

and are we gonna see any hardware changes in the UK version, such as 3G?(because thats the main reason I haven't bought a US one yet)

I doubt it.

That would require a completely new set of hardware, and it's likely that will come in the next revision :)

Does this make the iphone regionfree though ?

It will work with any GSM network.. in other words, yes :)

You can buy an iPhone on ebay.

Just buy one, download the unlocking software and put your own sim in :)

It's not illegal to unlock a phone, but I think AT&T are going on grounds that they've modified the firmware on the phone (which is illegal), although that's a long shot if the hack is entirely software-based as it doesn't technically change/add anything.

Who knows.. perhaps they will issue a statement and explain why they got a cease and decist order.

I've no doubt this will surface in one way or another though :)

He could have easily done 10 iPhones a week, and at a small charge of £25 ($50), so I think he dropped the ball a bit.

Apple wouldn't be able to lock it unless you downloaded their sofware for some reason. Even then it would be illegal for them to do so. They can't stop your phone working just because you have modified it, you own the hardware and can do whatever you want with it.

It is not illegal to unlock the handset for personal use, but modifying their software on the phone IS illegal.. that's where the problem lies for these unlocking services (they're not for personal use, and AT&T argue that it changes the software on the phone)

If you have an unlocked iPhone then wait a week or so after the update before applying the patch, and you'll find out if it will lock the handset through the grapevine :)

Apparently the devs are working on a simple UI app that will do all the steps in a few simple clicks, so stay tuned.

I'm happy to do the manual way if it's confirmed by someone on here first :):p

As far as my understanding goes (the same one Electric Ant posted), Woz said that they were going to keep rolling out software updates to iPhones; hacked or not..

If these said updates break any 3rd party apps (including the unlocks) by accident then Apple won't mind, but they won't be going out of their way to make sure that happens.

You need to go read the interview again

They've clearly stated they won't intentionally break the apps, but they won't be bothered if it happens.

We'll soon see when the next iPhone update is rolled out.

Yes and no.

To me that suggests that they might not initially break any apps, but over time that chance is going to increase as they change more and more code for the updates :)

Agreed. I don't 'need' and iPhone nearly enough to bow down to all the control freak activity that Apple is exhibiting. I am willing to bet that the contract with AT&T in the states and O2 here are on a limited time span and the hardware will eventually be available on most networks.

IMO anyone is better off waiting for the technology to mature a bit - i.e. 12 months at least.
They're tied in for a 5 year contract, unless there's some clause in there that would mean Apple could sneak out (doubtful, but not improbable).

I'm betting anyone who suggests on waiting is secretly wanting 3G, as the current design has been in labs and design stages for a good number of years and is pretty decent for a companies' first venture in to the phone industry.
