I have reported this issue before but I am at the end of my tether now with my iPhone, this problem alone will stop me buying another iPhone that's for sure.

This is the scenario:

Dell Studio 15
Windows 7 64 bit
iTunes 64bit
iPhone 32gb 3GS

Intermittently the phone just doesn't get recognised once plugged into my laptop, sometimes it works ok, syncs fine but 9 times out 10 once plugged in iTunes will not recognise I've had the iPhone plugged in before and want to either, "Set up as a new phone" or "Restore iPhone to certain date".

The last time I sync'd the phone was March 15th, 6 days ago. I don't want to lose data from then till now by restoring the phone.

Has anyone got this problem?? The iPhone works fine with my laptop and XP, never one problem!

It's bizarre, and it's definitely not the phone as I had it swapped out last week for another fault.

I get this very occassionally with my iPhone but it's a big problem with my iPod. My workaround with the iPod is to quit iTunes and then connect the iPod. iTunes opens automatically and it recognises the iPod every time. It's a well reported problem with iTunes and the iPod Classic and I hoped it had been fixed with the last iTunes update (it was mentioned) but it doesn't appear to have been.

It's not a fix but it may be a workaround for you.

Yeah I have tried both ways to no avail.

I've just gone back to the laptop with XP on it, more hassle but least I'm not risking losing everything on my phone constantly.

Just tried to update my iPhone 3G this afternoon and got 'unknown error code 1002'.
Tried to no avail to get it to restore the phone, just as it is about to complete restoring it comes up with the above error code.
The phone stayed in recovery mode.
I cannot be without my phone as I am a self employed on-call plumber so it is needed 24/7 so I rushed into town to the O2 shop, it was 3:45 and the shop shuts at 4.
The guy in the shop wondered if it was an issue with Windows 7 so he tried to update and reload the software on my phone using XP based iTunes.
Same error code came up just before update was completed.
His explanation was that my phone was 'Bricked' and my phone is being returned to apple for repair.
I have a 'lovely' Nokia 2330 as a loan phone......
Only good thing is that the last time I returned my phone to apple, the vibrating alert stopped working' I had a brand new phone sent and it was back within 5 days:D

I do know the problem you are having and its a minor OS bug that I was told was going to be fixed but this has failed to materialise. The most obvious workaround that I have had to use with both Vista SP2 and W7 is to turn off Autosync when connected. It has something to do with the initial power draw on connection. If you use a powered USB Hub to connect it may still cause you problems with the PC because the PC often has extra devices connected to the Hub.
iTunes thinks it needs charging before it syncs and often does initialise it even to the devies on the left hand side while it waits the iPhone to peak charge. I usually plug it into my PC and leave it to initialise for 5 minutes.
Leave iTunes software open disconnect, then reconnect and it should appear.
I have the iPhone and an iPod Touch Classic V2. The iPod is much less hassle than the iPhone. Where both mine are 16gb I have the same music Video Apps etc on both which is my little fail-safe way of not getting caught out having to remember my online purchases etc. XP on the PC is still the best one for doing the syncing because although Vista and W7 are memory efficient the way memory is manipulated makes them power hungry when connecting peripherals.
