this is doing my head in....

I'm used to outlook syncing my contacts to my phone wirelessly.. every job I've had since smartphones became even a slightly big deal has had some sort of exchange setup where I can sync my emails, calendar and contacts with my phone.

Right now thats and iPhone and there's not much chance of that changing because firstly I like it and secondly I work for a fairly heavily iOS involved company now.

The problem comes with the fact we use Gmail and I have a company Macbook pro and it's set up to use Apple Mail.

I can's see any way to sync my contacts? I have ical synced to my google calendar which I guess is OK, I also have my email on my phone which is great.

How can I get some sort of 2 way sync going with my contacts? I followed an online guide to syncing gmail with contacts which asked me if I wanted to delete everything off my phone which was fine, but thats all it did?

I don't have any more contacts in my Macs address book, nothing else in gmail?

This was totally seamless with a windows pc, exchange and outlook regardless of what handset I was using.. Gmail, mac and mail just seems a bit of a mess to me which leads me to assume I'm doing it wrong?

HALP! :)

Thanks!

Should be easy peasy :)

For your iPhone: Use Google Sync to synchronise your contacts on your iPhone.

For your Mac: Address Book > Preferences > Accounts > On My Mac > Synchronise with Google

Gmail Contacts: It sounds like you have lost them? I'm slightly confused here, but if that's the case, log into Gmail > Contacts > More menu (next to Add Contact menu) > Restore contacts.

You can of course use Google Sync for your email, though note that you won't be able to search the server for emails that aren't on your phone (only an issue if you have your phone set to sync the most recent emails only). The only advantage that Google Sync offers for email as a result is push.

I never had any to lose, I followed the guide you linked and it doesn't seem to be doing anything... maybe I've done it wrong?

no there's no contacts going in either direction..

reckon I can do it by cable easily? I've got a million sync cables and the 2 devices are always in the same place?

Ah, another thought, which I may be wrong with as I use iCloud, but you may have the default Contacts location as your iPhone? With Google Contacts set up, if you go to Settings > General > Mail, Contacts and Calendars > scroll to the Contacts section, Default Account. Is Google selected?

I've never had issues with 2 way syncing contacts between my iPhone/iPad and Gmail account when you set it up via the Microsoft Exchange option. Put m.google.com as your server address, and full Gmail address as username.

sync you apple mobile / tablet with gmail configured as exchange not imap.... (ie pick Exchange as the server you want to sync with)

Exchange with Gmail isn't necessarily a good idea. It works fine, but IMAP works slightly better.

Literally that matey, duplicate contacts. Normally when numbers are changed on the phone, and syncing up/back down they duplicate as additional contacts.

well I've set my iphone to have the default contacts be gmail, I already have my gmail set up as exchange with m.google etc and I have my address book on the mac set to sync with google using the same settings.

Nothing. Created new contacts at both ends to see if I had a sync issue but still nothing is syncing in either direction???

wargarbl!

So now I've found I can make a contact on my iPhone and get it to my address book and vice versa, I just can't move everything thats in the group "all on my iPhone" to my exchange group.

This really is awful, never had any issues like this before...

Any hacks/bits of software (I am jailbroken if that makes a difference to the choice) that can get all my contacts off and then I could manually put them into my address book with an import? That'll sort it.

If you go into the Google Contacts group, and make a new contact, it should create a new contact with Google. I'd double check the default group (iCloud or Google Contacts) to make sure. Either way, you have to make sure it's created in the correct group. I have iCloud and Google Contacts synced on my phone, running duplicates, but if I make a new contact in the combined view, it only makes it in my default account; I have to create the new contact in each account, then edit the combined view.

As for apps to do that, don't have any idea, sorry. If you set up iCloud on both the Mac and the phone, then sync your computer with Google, that'll get your contacts onto Google. That will then sync with your phone, then you can turn iCloud off on both your Mac and your phone.
