iPhone Multitasking?

so Fring doesnt run in the background of my iphone ??? there are also other apps that run in the background as well, therefore you... FAIL, hang your head in shame and leave the room....

Could you name the other apps that run in the background that aren't Apples apps please? Is your phone jailbroken?

How come Fring can run in the background yet other apps can't?

last time I checked Fring wasnt owned by Apple but by Fringland, Grinder also multi-tasks, not that I use it but did set it up on a friends for a laugh, oh and because it multi-tasks he didnt spot it for half a day !

For 'true' multi tasking the iphone fails on a major major level unless you want to jailbreak aka hack your iphone in order to do so.

But for some bit part multi tasking it does fine i suppose...the iphone hardware from what i have read cant support true multi tasking ie 3 or more apps in the background without having the phone shut them down automatically.

I suggest you look at any 'real' smartphones ie ones that run symbian, Winmo and even the Blackberries which multi task with ease;).

Anyone claiming the iphone can multi task doesnt know what the hell they are talking about and that includes you arfur...if you can run more than 3 apps in the background without having the iphone shut them down then it would seem like your iphone is jailbroken as out of the box...the iphone cannot do 'true' multi tasking...i know this because i have played with my youngest brothers iphone 3gs and it cant multi task like my Blackberry Bold can do with ease.

3 points to your reply -

1 - I'm not saying it multi-tasks well, the statement was "the iphone cannot multi-task"
2 - my phone has push email / fring / safari / phone / tomtom running, thats more than 3..go on count them
3 - so what if the iphone is jail broken? this is mainly used for other networks i.e. when I go abroad,
4 - you state "your youngest brother" therefore you must have at least 2 brothers, if your parents had an iphone with apps store then I'm sorry but you'd be an only child...

No, it doesnt - it uses push technology (a workaround), Fring is not actually running in the background, hence the iphone itself is not multitasking. "Fail" *Sigh*

As for the other apps you mention, TomTom, Safari etc, the iphone 'pauses' the application then restarts when opened again. Again no multitasking.

Why are apple people so damn protective? Accept it cant properly multitask, hopefully it will with its next update next year - this would make it a formidable OS and a phone worth buying imo (if they add a flash/decent camera).

Saved me from having to type all that out to him in response to his post:p..cheers.

Only reason why they are so protective of their iphones is that they have to justify the cost of getting them plus the fact that they are getting shafted by Apple and O2 when it comes to tariffs and what they can do with their phones lol.

Lol wut??..how is that relevant to anything i have posted...but pretty observant of you to figure out that i have 2 younger brothers...did you use your iphone to figure that out??...seeing as the iphone has all sorts of useless apps nowadays:p.

I don't pay for my iPhone or my tariff so you can count me out of that generalisation. I use different phones all the time at work and for me personally the best is the iPhone by far.

Once we stop seeing everything being compared to an iPhone then it might be the time that something else better has come along and I'll swap. :D

Hmm, sod the iPhone then, I dunno, I might see if I can fiddle about with a friends for a bit if I get a chance, but to be honest, its not looking all that great.

What are the alternatives like? Does Android or WinMo have a decent Sat-Nav out for it + good Ebook reader (I love eBooks on my phone! Have a whole library in my pocket!)?

What are the Android & WinMo handsets themselves like? Zippy? Slow? Buggy? Can't Multitask? (:p) Poor availability of Apps?

Can someone also link the WinMo and Android appstores/marketplaces?

I had a Touch HD (WinMo) and I hated it. I used it for 6 months and then bought an iPhone, best thing I ever did.

The interface was slow, clunky, ugly, and just a pain in the arse.

Why not have a look at the Blackberry Storm2...not the original one as that was just plain rubbish but the new one, which should be out later this month or next month is a definite improvement from the first Storm....well looking at the videos that i have found on crackberry.

Although i will still say go into a Voda shop when they are released and have a play with one in real life....thats what im planning to do and if its as good or better than the original Storm then ill probably pick one up to mess around with.

It does true multi tasking and the BB appworld is getting much better slowly but there are plenty of paid and free apps available for the BB.

Just what I done coming from a WM Omnia.

iPhone is the nicest phone I have used ever. Sure there are things that could do with updating but im sure they will come in time *fingers crossed*

I think I will be updating to every new iPhone that comes out from now on. Roll on 4G :D

Have a look at the HTC Touch Pro2. Brilliant phone which can multi-task!

But it's also a chunky brick running WinMo. Two boxes I'd rather not tick any more. I've been there and done that as an owner of an HTC TyTN for over two years. I took delivery of an iPhone a week ago and I think I've already installed more apps on the iPhone than the TyTN. What does that say about usability?

I ahve a Tocuh Pro at the moment (original one) and yes I like it but it can be clunky at times. Apps are good and very customizable but does take a while to learn and understand how to install apps, and stuff. I am seriously look to change to an iPhone but have a question about o2 but i'll create a new topic for that.

I had both the TyTN and the TyTN 2 and while they're much of a muchness the Touch Pro 2 is in a completely different league. Much more responsive (as responsive as a capacitive screen and without the disadvantages) and the skin HTC have put on it improves Windows Mobile a hundred fold.

I also installed next to no apps on either of my TyTNs and now on the TP2 I have facebook, youtube, stopwatch, a translator, iplayer, tomtom etc etc. Apple does have a much easier and seamless way of finding and installing them though.

It is quite chunky...

I have no doubt TF3D makes a huge difference to the UI, but there's still WinMo lurking under there and I was, frankly, done. :)

Nearly got an Android phone but decided Apple was best for me this year.

Bloody hell here come all the WM fanboiz, run.

Its a tough one as there is no 'perfect' OS.

Android - immature OS, a bit slow (cpu in android phones are a little underpowered), decent GUI - the closest iphone OS replacement.
WM - Buggy, slow, dated, good for enterprise, lots of apps.
S60 - Dated, not optimised for touch/poor GUI, but solid OS.
iphone - 'Locked down' OS, no multitasking, but sexual GUI!

Personally Im holding out to see how the N900 is (Maemo OS).
