Hi,

The missus has just bought an iPhone. However, when she plugs it into her iMac, it tells here that in order to use the iPhone she needs OSX 10.4.10 or later.

Being a windows man, I've never had to do an install of OSX before. Could anyone point me in the direction of an idiots guide or similar of how it's done?

Cheers,

Fred

You can find out which version of Mac OS is installed by clicking the Apple menu in the top left, then "About This Mac"

If it's 10.4, then you can update to the 10.4.10 "service pack" using "Software Update" from the same menu.

If it's lower than 10.4 then you'd have to buy the new OS. 10.5 (Leopard) is the latest one.

10.3.9.

OK, so she needs to buy Leopard.

Is it available to download (eg buy and download, not warez ;)) anywhere, or does she need to buy the box with the DL-DVD and all the rest of it?

You have to buy the whole lot from Apple. Just make sure that Leopard is compatible with her Mac.

Edit: or you could buy Tiger second hand on eBay.

OK She's going down to the Apple shop on Regent St at lunchtime to get a copy of Leopard.

What a palava just to have an iPhone :-/

Not really, it is effectively the same as Microsoft demanding you have XP SP 2 and up for IE7 and the rest of it.

Yeah I know! We tried plugging into an XP laptop, only to be told that we needed SP2 and IE7.

So many hoops to jump through, it is unbelievable.

Hope it's worth it :D
