iphone not on O2, whats the benefits?

Hi Guys

My Orange contract is up soon and I'm thinking of getting an iphone, but would it be a mistake to move from Orange to O2?

What's their network like for reception (although I know that's based on lots of other factors too?)

I'm also liking the N82 but again Orange don't do that either :( damn them!

I just had a look on their website, am I right in saying you have to pay a sum of money for the handset and then a monthly charge?

you don't have to have the O2 iPhone contract though.

So you could purchase the handset from another source and then "jailbreak" it if thats the correct term?

Whats the cost of buying one out right though £400+ and will the web still be as fast on other networks?

Hmmm so get my free upgrade from Orange (most expensive one) flog it and put the funds towards one of these bad boys!

Is that wrong of me to say that? :p

I know someone mentioned that Orange has EDGE on their network but I assume we'd have to pay extra for that service?

But this means we could use e-mail and internet at speed on the device?

Me to, I sold the upgrade (a N95) and it only cost me an extra £25 to buy the iPhone :D

People must have unlocked to any sim going by the above?

EDIT: I just called Orange and they said their policies changed last week and they now aren't able to upgrade poeple in their 16 month of an 18 month contract as they had previously been able to do......??

Bit angry really as she said it would be £300 to upgrade now BUT as I'm a grade 4 customer (5 being the highest) I could call back in March and they may reduce that cost.....lol yeah right

Right I just spoke to Orange again and they can do me a free upgrade, BUT not until this Friday which is my 16 month starts :)

Although they (on the phone) don't do the N95 8gb they said I'd have to go to a retail shop so I know where I'm heading Saturday morning !!

Then they are in the habit of telling porkies to their customers then as the guys said "oh yeah just pop along to your retail store and they will sort you out" lol git

Just been thinking, if Orange don't do the N95 (8gb) then the likelihood of my being able to get a handset to fund my iphone purchase is slim :(

Looking on the Orange website their upgrade choices look poor? Is there better handsets to be had if I go instore do we think?

I take that as a no then? :)

Will the plot thickens!!

Orange retail shops don't stock the N95 (8gb) BUT the guy I just spoke on the phone with (from my local store) said I could go to CPW and get the N95 (8gb) on and Orange contract as an upgrade... wtf?

Strange but if that's the case then I'm happy, but until I get there and hear it for myself I'm loathed to believe it :)
