iPhone not recognising handsfree?

My iPhone 3GS doesn't recognise it has a handsfree plugged into it anymore - I hear sound through the headphones etc. but I can't use the remote buttons and the mic doesn't work.

It's not the headphones as I bought a second pair and get the same problem

Anyone had this before?

Get yourself a paperclip or a very thin screwdriver and put it in the headphone port, have a careful dig around, you'll be suprised how much crap you'll pull out of it, that should sort your problem.

Might be a good idea to turn the iPhone off first though just incase.
