Me and a couple of friends are both experiencing the same problem now regarding iphone / O2 and SMS messages. Basically I frequently experience massive delays in sending and receiving text messages.

Often I receive a text message dated from 4 hours earlier. And likewise some of my texts can take hours to reach other people. 90% of the time its ok, but these delays really annoy me..

Anyone else experienced this? Or have any idea on how I can fix it? :(
I think it might have something to do with losing the signal and not rejoining the network properly..

I don't have an iPhone, but I think your first port of call here is gonna be identifying the problem; call o2 and see if the message delays are on their systems or yours. If it's yours (seems likely to be yours if your iPhone wielding friend has the same problem too), see if there's any way to have a look at message queues or whatever outbox system the iPhone uses. I only say this because I very occasionally have this problem on o2 but it seems to be because of a momentary loss of signal a split second before or during my message sending and it ends up 'deferred' in my outbox- luckily my n95 lets me see queues like this in the outbox- and it's just a case of hitting send again. No idea if the iPhone has anything similar, sorry.

First thing I would do is to call O2, as it sounds like its more of a network issue than a phone one.
