It was bought directly from the website, no Apple care, anyone have an idea what my best course of action is here?..I do have an Apple store nearish to me.

There were issues with Max's randomly 'freezing' with earlier versions of iOS 16 but i have a feeling Apple pushed out a (possible) fix with 16.3/16.3.1.
I would just keep an eye on it and if it happens again, then take it into Apple.

I'm guessing you're running the latest iOS 16.4.1?

Running latest yes, just weird that I went to bed..left on wirless charge, woke up late for work as the phone had just bricked itself.

Edit..Just checked and weirdly im on 16.3.1, even with Auto updates on. Its saying unable to Check for Update ( on cellular).
Kept mashing..updating.

That was the issue being described by other Max users, iPhone would 'freeze' and then display a black screen and then some were able to do a forced reboot, others had to take it to Apple.

As for the updates, i would try and reboot and see if it picks up the update. Failing that, wait until you're on WiFi and try again. Otherwise the downloaded update can bodge itself and fail to install, Apple has a guide for that - Remove and download the update again
