It seems my wife has promised my daughter an iphone 3GS for her borthday in February... so now I have to source one!! I want an 8gb white one, preferably unlocked. I dont want to take a contract with it, she has a contract with Orange atm that has recently started and I am not paying any more dosh monthly!!

Can anyone suggest places I should be looking for bargains? What price am I looking to pay?

I woudl prefer a warranty and daughter is a student, I know I can get a discount from Apple, I think its 8%, is that right? That still seems to put it comfortably over £300.

They don't do 8gb 3GS sadly, just the 3G, which is only in black. For the 3GS you're looking at 16gb or 32gb, on P&G the 16gb 3GS starts at just over £440. You don't get discount on ipods or iphones either sadly, just on machines, software, apple accs.

You can get it unlocked by O2 for £14.69 if you go P&G

iPhone Pay & Go customers

Yes, you can unlock your iPhone for a one-off cost of £14.69. You'll pay for this from the money topped-up on your phone.

But if you unlock your iPhone less than 12 months after you bought it, we'll take off the free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On (that we added for the first 12 months). You can buy a Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On for £10 a month when you fill in the unlocking form. Find out more about the Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On here.

He could buy it on payg through Orange instead, making it cheaper as no unlock fee ;).

Although as his daughter is a Student, getting it from apple may be better.

In the end, all companys should or will be unlocking iphone handsets in the future as the o2 exlcusivity has now finished.
