Hey there,

I was thinking to myself how could I get custom text message ringtones without being jailbroken.

And the idea came to me of having a 3rd party app which has notifications that detect the sms arriving and plays a sound from the apps notification feature.
You would turn the apple sms tone off so there would be no overlapping of tones.

Is such an idea possible? Or does apple block all features to do with the sms feature?

The only downside, but a liveable downside, is there would be 2 notification windows pop-up (or maybe not if it can be prevented).

Its an idea that has just popped into my mind so I haven't researched or anything, and I have no background in developing so don't no the limitations of iOS.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great,

Cheers

Would be nice but I doubt it's possible.

biteSMS and tethering is definitively the sole reason why I JB my phone, everything else is a bonus.

It's my understanding third party apps can't tap into the Messages.app that way.

What they can employ is a text message interface for sending a message (similar to how a compose email sheet can be brought up in an app).

I think that's the height of it though.

Damn, I don't understand why they don't allow custom text tones... its slightly crazy imo
