iPhone speaker problems

Good Afternoon all,

My 16GB 3G iPhone has decided over the weekend that it no longer wants to ring. It'll vibrate happily whenever a call comes through, and the earpiece itself works fine, but the loudspeaker doesn't ring at all, and if I put a call on the loudpspeaker, or try and play a song through the iPod app without any headphones plugged in, no sound comes out of the unit.

I've tried a restore, tried plugging in and removing headphones, and basically wiped the lot and restored it again and still not having any joy. It would appear the speaker itself is dead.

Now, has anyone had issues like this before? I've given Apple support a call and they've asked me do the same things as I've already tried, and have referred me to the Apple store to have it looked at.

Here's the kicker though. According to Apple, the warranty on my phone expired about 10 days ago. What are the chances Apple would 'let it through' as such and repair the phone under warranty? They've already said it's going to cost £168 just to have a look at the thing and repair it if possible, but that's an insane amount of money for a speaker.

Anyone else had just out of warranty issues? What were your experiences? I really don't want to have to fork out £168 on the unit, and even worse than that, the phone was given to my by my ex girlfriend as she upgraded to the 3GS so I don't even have a receipt for it at the moment.

Thanks.
