Step son is at uni and using a wired connection to his laptop but wants to get on net to use his iphone 4, tried setting up personal hotspot using adhoc but this did not work. If i got him a usb wifi adapter would that work?

Yes connected via ethernet, but had to use a disk to get it enabled could not just plug in and go.
The wireless AP you suggested does that plug into the laptops ethernet or the wall?

He linked to a wifi extender, surely it's an AP you need? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-052-TP&groupid=46&catid=1837&subcat=

BUT I wouldn't go buying it yet. Depending on University accommodation rules, you're usually only allowed one device to be connected to the network. Usually you can get away with this though with a router instead, so the network will only see the router MAC address but not the devices connected to it, hence tricking it into thinking you only have one device on the network ;).

If memory serves me i think he can connect upto 5 devices, not 100% sure. And he's not particually tech savvy, so he would not be able to tell me. So do you think the AP you suggested would do the job?

Lots of Uni halls don't allow students to set up wireless APs, so bear in mind that he could end up with a temporary ban from the network if he's caught! Even if he can connect 5 devices, he might not be allowed to set up an AP. Check with the Uni's rules.
