As per title -

How can I turn off all data/3G services on the iPhone?

Do I need to turn both data roaming and 3G off in the Settings?

Going abroad next week and want to avoid any data charges.

you just using is as a mp3/video/game player ???? could you not just put it in airplane mode

I never understood data roaming... I always have mine off?

If data roaming is off, when you go abroad your phone won't connect to the internet at all, even if you open safari etc, it will just say you're offline.

It's to stop you being charged £3 / MB in Europe or £6 / MB elsewhere, leading to huge phone bills without you realising what you're doing.

Having data roaming turned on or off in the UK has absolutely no effect whatsoever. :)

In OS 4 there is an option to turn off all cellular data GPRS, EDGE, 3G.

This then offers the use of WiFi or Bluetooth if you need it.

So not long then you can. :)

EDIT: Having data roaming off will prevent anything getting out ot the internet when in a different country.

Data roaming and 3G are not the same, I have data turned off but 3G turned on because in Korea without it the phone won't work (no 2G network).

However if your not using data in a country with a GPRS network (USA for example) turning off 3G improves battery life quiet abit.

Yeah, House makes a very good point.

Last time I went somewhere with out 3G, I was using the phone mainly just to send texts and as an iPod. WiFi, Data and 3G are all off and you will be amazed how long you can go between charges.
