iPhone unlocking?

Hi,

I signed up for a SIM only deal with EE (I’m currently with Orange) and have an iPhone 4s. Despite being told otherwise (by Orange) it now seems I need to unlock my phone to get the EE SIM to work. Orange seem to think it’ll take upto 21 days to get an unlock code – I can’t wait that long so they’ve credited my account with £20 get it done elsewhere.

I found somewhere on the web that I thought would do it for £20 in 72hours but that now seems to have been a pre-order price, another £80 will get the full factory unlock!!

I am being a total pleb? The last time I got my phone unlocked it cost £10 – yes a few years ago. Are iPhones this much of pain to unlock? I now understand Apple control all the unlocking codes and this has to be done via iTunes, and not as the Orange adviser told me “can be done at one of those back street phone shops”……

Is there a quicker way to get my phone fully unlocked? or do I have to do without a phone and suffer Orange once again?

TYIA

Where exactly did you purchase the phone from?

If you purchased it from an apple store then it's permanently unlocked, but if you got it from the carphone warehouse and the like or from the network then you'll have to go through the network to get it unlocked as they have to tell apple to put the IMEI number onto their database of unlocked iPhones.

Those 'back street phone shops' orange suggests can do it will only jailbreak the phone to unlock it which is currently impossible if you've updated to iOS 7.1 and even if you hadn't updated the update would remove the jailbreak and the unlock with it.

Cheers! Explained well. Looks like I'll be waiting 20days for Orange....

... and the rest. ;)

Apple state it takes up to 7 days. Orange/EE appear to sit on them for as long as possible before submitting them.

It's all a big con and about time someone looked into this locking business
