iPhone USB C charge port corrosion

My wife’s iPhone 15 Pro Max stopped charging via the charging port. She was getting the message water detected. This happened a few days out of the standard 1 year warranty. This remained for a few days so I booked an appointment with Apple Genius Bar. When they looked at the port they said there was some minor corrosion to the charging port. They also said this is happening a lot more with USB C compared to the old lightning port. I was surprised as my wife has not knowingly got the phone wet etc. I’ve had a 14,15 and now 16 Pro Max myself and got the previous two wet completely many times and never had any issues. They took the phone gave it some type of clean and it is working now but there is no guarantee how long it will continue to charge via the charging port. At least there is MagSafe as a backup.

They were also more than happy to try and sell me a new phone and trade in the old one with a broken charging port for £570 value. They said in store they don’t check for this. But if you post it in they do. I said I’ll think about it

Fill me with masses of confidence. Had to get rid of my Samsung S23U because it kept getting moisture detected message. Cleaned the build up of lint and it’s still doing it. So took an early upgrade and got a 16 pro max.
My Galaxy S9 did the same.

I've not had any issues with the USB-C port on my 15 Pro Max.. yet! However, it is concerning to read about potential corrosion.

I am still glad that we have moved to a non-proprietary port, it's very convenient. especially when travelling. Lightning was a nice connector though.

I've started to get the same recently. Messages of unable to charge, water detected. This can happen on days that the phone hasn't left the house. From research it looked as though it was early stages of corrosion. Also 15 pro Max.

Clearly an issue with the manufacturing process of Apple's USB-C ports. This port has been implemented widely for years on Android devices and I've not heard of widespread corrosion issues. I've had my 15 Pro Max since Oct 2023, no issues yet, although I always charge wirelessly at home. I guess it may just be a matter of time.

However a quick google of usb c port corroding android returns plenty of results going back for years.

This isn't an issue exclusive to Apple.
