As for the o2 contract.. I agree i've been mugged but as I was already paying £35 squid a month anyway (don't ask!) I don't really notice the amount going out of my account anymore....

Am I the only one who thinks having a plastic back is going to be bad?

Every ipod so far has a metal back and it's almost an Apple signiture, not to mention that the current iphone feels very solid in the hand. I can't help but feel that a plastic back is going to scratch like mad and making it feel like all the other phones on the market (being plastic).

I agree.. one of the reasons I like the iPhone so much is that it feels like it's build like a tank. I hate the way most modern phones seem to be built from cheap plastic.. my phones from old used to survive being dropped, kicked, bounced, and occasionally run over without breaking, but I feel like my N95 would break if I looked at it sternly :)

i dont know if it will be too much of a problem. they'd probably have to make the plastic back thicker so it didnt feel flimsy. .........

......oh maybe thats why its thicker then lol

To be honest, I think it's all still guesswork.. I don't believe anyone has had their hands on the 3g version yet.. or if they have they'd be to scared of apple anal raping them for any leaks to get out ;)

*** The iPhone 'v2' Rumours Thread ***

Sorry for another iPhone thread :) But this had to be posted...

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/04/30/att_iphone_axe/

AT&T is to follow the example of O2 in the UK and Germany's T-Mobile and chop the price of the iPhone. But not the current model - it's going to subsidise the anticipated 3G version to the tune of $200.

So claims a Fortune magazine report citing a single source.

The $200 discount will take the price of an 8GB 3G iPhone to $199, it's said, implying the new version will be a direct replacement for the two current iPhones. The 16GB 3G iPhone is said to have been priced at $499 before the subsidy.

The discount is almost certainly an attempt not only to draw more users to AT&T's network, but also a strike against buyers who plan to unlock the new handset and use it with another network. The subsidy makes the price of the handset plus the airtime package more attractive. It's tied to a two-year monthly airtime contract.

And this...

Fortune's mole maintains Apple will stop shipping the existing iPhone round about then. The Deep Throat also claimed the iPhone will be 21 per cent thinner than the original, despite packing GPS technology as well as 3G.

Rumours and guesswork.. won't believe anything until it's in the o2 shops :)

I wouldn't be half surprised if o2 ditched the online activation stuff if they do subsidise though, and just require a standard in-store contract.

Not sure Apple would let them tbh. They like the whole iTunes thing.

EDIT: I WANT MY NAME BACK ! :(

Slap in the face? I thought people liked new products...

Weeeell slap in the face as in someone could buy a 2.5G iPhone end of May, and then suddenly find themselves in a position where they couldve bought a superior phone with superior connection for a cheaper price.

That's pretty much the same with everything though really.

It's the same with the Mac range of products isn't it? To buy one now or wait for x.x intel chip or x.x. GPU e.t.c. which may or may not work out to be the same price or cheaper.

You like something such as the iPhone, buy it now. Wait till August-September-Octoberish, that's a lot of waiting unless your contract isn't up till then.

Yea I guess... but only difference is that with this is you cant get out of your contract once your signed up (at least as far as I know...)

It's the same with the iPhone contract now but you don't hear people complaining? Look at the iPhone Jailbreak lot... the 100quid drop also brough LOTS more people buying it just to jailbreak and use and some even happily taking up the 35quid tariff.

The pricing is what's attracting consumers now and Apple knows it :)

Yes but what Im saying is that people who first ....

... ugh... nevermind :D

I don't see how this is a slap in the face?

The people who bought on launch night have had their use of the phone, and when the 3G one comes out they'll just transfer the SIM to the new handset, and flog the old one on an auction site

As for Apple lowering the price, then introducing a newer model.. it's a common tactic. Flog your surplus stock before introducing the newer models.
