I've had an annoying problem for the last few weeks or so that is driving me crazy. Basically GPRS and Edge data just stops working, and I have to either:

1) Switch on 3G, use it for a second, then switch back to GPRS/Edge.
2) Reboot the phone

Once i've rebooted the phone it works fine and I can get data access no problems. Then after an hour or so the problem comes back so I have to reboot again..

The GPRS symbol is always there, and under Useage the phone is basically receiving 0kb in while its struggling for access. I've tried doing the "Reset Network Settings", but no luck. For reference i'm on a Vodafone SIM-only contract.

Any ideas? :(

I'd give them a call. My vodafone contract signal drops every so often which is quite annoying - sometimes have to switch to airplane mode to refresh the signal.

I'm getting a sim only tomorrow, I hope this doesn't happen to me...

I had a similar issue with my O2 iphone actually, for me turning flight mode on and then off again (forcing re-register with the network) did the trick. I eventually went to an apple store and moaned (not because I thought it was them, it had other quirks too) and they replaced in on the spot and somewhat to my surprise it's been much better since, still happens every so often but not as much...

Hmmm I also noticed that while lying in bed, I could hear the mobile interference on the radio all the time, like the phone was constantly sending/receiving data. So I turned Push Email off and it stopped right away..

And so far it's also stopped my intermittant GPRS problem too.. maybe Email is to blame?

EDIT: Definitely seems to be PUSH related. I turned PUSH back on, and even though both of my email accounts are up to date, it continuously sends / receives data on GPRS. On the useage screen I can see it ticking up by 2-3kb every few seconds. I really don't get it! Never had this problem until a few weeks ago, grrrrr

Problem solved I think! Looking at the Push problem, I dug through the archives on Mac Rumors and found that somebody suggested deleted the Exchange email account and reinstalling it. Apparently Exchange accounts can be a bit twitchy, especially if you have a huge Inbox.

Tried it, and it's worked! GPRS is no longer continuously sending/receiving for no reason. Fingers crossed it holds! :)

Stupid question but my 3GS was originally on O2 (bought SIM free) before being unlocked so I can use it on Orange.

I have no idea how to enable GPRS/Edge, all I have is the 3G symbol, am I missing something?

3G mode if not available will revert to Edge, on older phones you had all this to contend with..

I phoned Orange and they told me that there's no setting for GPRS and that all I had to do was to reset my network settings and when I rebooted it should pick up the network settings I needed. I did this and surprise surprise, it didn't work, I lost my wifi settings as well as everything else. Stupid Orange.

Still no EDGE though, anyone got any more ideas?
