iPhone vs iPod Touch (performance)

I have an iPod classic for almost exclusive use in my cars.

I've recently been thinking about getting an iPod touch instead as I believe this would allow me to manipulate the playlists and delete/download tracks when out and about. Basically save the hassle of connecting to a computer.

Firstly, is that correct?

Secondly. I've been offered an iPhone 3GS 32Gb for £70. 32Gb is enough for me so I was considering going down this route and having phone functionality as a bonus.

Question is, how does the performance of the iPhone stack up against a similar generation iPod touch? Am I likely to get a better iPod touch 32Gb for £70?

Any input at all welcome.

It's partly correct as you'll be able to alter playlists and download tracks, but you can't delete tracks without a computer.

If you're talking about an iPod touch literally from the same generation, the performance will be the same. That generation of iPhone/iPod touch was the last to use exactly the same components, ie. the same amount of RAM. The current models do not.

However, the 3rd gen iPod touch does not support iOS 6, while the 3GS does. Would pick the 3GS up for this reason alone, even though performance will be poor (you'll have the option to stay on iOS 5, simply don't update it).

I thought I remembered doing this on my old iPhone. Surely this is an OS thing and would therefore be an option on the 3GS with the latest available software?
