Have you enabled Bluetooth on the Mac & the iPhone?
You may have to play around with the "Discoverable" setting on the Mac, and in the case of the iPhone turn it on before you start (it's off by default).
Just click "Setup new device" in System Preferences: Bluetooth and follow the wizard
