Apple have said their facial recognition software on the iPhone X is top-notch and that the chances of somebody else being able to unlock your phone is - literally - 'one in a million', a woman called Yan has already proved that's clearly not the case.

Hailing from Nanjing in China, Yan got her hands on an iPhone X, only to discover that her co-worker could easily unlock it with her face, too. Even after a major rejig of the configuration settings.

While the story is slightly amusing as it plays off a well known stereotype I do wonder if Apple have perhaps rather arrogantly neglected to test this technology thoroughly on Asian faces... I mean white people are probably a minority as far as customers across the globe are concerned but I'd wager that a disproportionate number of white faces were used in testing.

Out of millions of iPhones Xs sold this is the first I have heard of this happening, so when they say "Yan has already proved that's clearly not the case", do they mean that Yan has proved that the chances of it happening are even lower than one in a million? :p

I think you're placing way too much weight on it being the first time you hearing of it - it also has problems with identical twins.

Let's be honest, it's based on nothing other than what you want to believe.

No it is based on there having been problems in the past with tech companies clearly not testing sufficiently on Asian faces, perhaps you're ignorant of this but for example several years ago we had the blinking problem with face recognition prompting this Time article entitled:

"Are Face-Detection cameras racist?"

I’m sure you could find two white people that it would struggle with, but of course you know this.

yes and if you bothered to read the thread you'd know this too - see comment re: identical twins

But you didn’t set out talking about that problem, you set out with a trashy click bait title and now you’re on damage control trying to get back to a real issue.

nope I set out in the OP talking about that problem, you've again failed to read the thread

as for the thread title, see the similar titles on the time article about blinking faces or the youtube clip posted in my previous post...

It's not just ignorance; it's also technically harder to do recognition and identification on black faces because of the lower contrast. There's also a problem that if you tune it for one facial morphology, it may make it less sensitive for others.

Buy, yeah, it's mostly neglect.

I'm not disputing that it is harder - my comment re: ignorance relates to posts such as this:

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/31433211/

which if the poster was aware that there have been a history of tech issues surrounding non-white faces they'd perhaps not be quite so baffled by that opinion/speculation
