iphone ?

No.

Well, maybe.

Yes.

Oh hell, I don't know. How about you investigate what the phone can do, look at it's pros and cons, and then decide if it's right for your personal needs?

lol @ memphis :p

it might be worth actually telling us what you need your next phone to do before you ask us to reccomend the iphone, because all of us who have it will just say yes get it because we love it just that much :D

I was all set to get an iPhone, but the O2 tariffs put me off (although it is possible I didn't read them right!)

Looked to me that the main tariffs had x amount of minutes free but didn't mention SMS allowances.

In the end I went and got a HTC touch diamond.....so I may not be as cool as the iPhone people but the Diamond is nice.

Shame as the phone itself is lovely (I am a recent Apple convert after using the ipod touch since it appeared), it was O2 that pushed me away :(

Didn't go for the Omnia due to it being humungous!!

So you read the tariffs with your eyes shut then...

75 mins / 125 texts.
600 / 500
1200 / 500
3000 / 500

Depends what you want from your phone. I used to have a v1 and am now on a v2. My thoughts are:

Postive
1) Excellent UI
2) The best mobile browser experience I have ever had
3) Touchscreen (very subjective, some people hate the lack of proper keys)
4) Some really nice apps out there

Negative
1) Lack of MMS ( I never use it, but if you do this could be a biggy)
2) Lack of copy and paste, errrr what are apple thinking here
3) Battery life can be a bit sucky, but I believe thats generally true of all such devices
4) Some instability problems (apps crasjing), but with firmware 2.1 these have all gone for me
5) Price, it is quite an expensive handset. I thought it was worth it, but it all depends of the value you put on money

I would really recommend trying to get hold of one for a play, mainly to test out the touchscreen controls. I know some people just cannot adapt to it. Also, ignore any advice from people that either say "it's a pile of poop", or that it's the "best phone in the world OMG".

Not through official means, but if you hack it there is one available. I think it's called swirly MMS, or something like that.

I never use MMS myself, but I still think that it was a stupid omission on the behalf of apple. Nice revenue earner for the carriers too!

Thats actually the best response I've seen! :D

I still can't decide myself, I think I'm going to wait until the touch screen blackberry turns up and then decide.

Get the iphone!

Only 2 things i miss: MMS - Just email them now and Forwarding txts! but no biggy!

I'd not trade mine for anything but a iphone 3.0 :P

ok so when i upgrade my phone in the next few weeks all i need to do is jailbreak it and install the swirly MMS?

MMS isn't enabled on the standard o2 contract, and it's tough to explain why you would want it on a device that doesn't support it.

It's not the best phone in the world, people who need a good camera or video functions/turn by turn GPS/fully functional exchange integration should look elsewhere. However if you don't need those functions right now and can wait then the software will become available to allow all but the camera issues to be resolved.

As for MMS it's easy to explain. Pick up phone, call iphone team, tell them you have installed a 3rd party application to allow MMS, you've tested it with a friends contract sim who's on a non iphone tariff and you now need them to add the MMS service code on the back end provisioning system, you don't want any support, just the service code adding, it's a non chargeable option. If you want the full spiel have a look at my post on the subject including the settings required to make it work with the iphone on this forum a few weeks back. Back when I did it they had pulled the app store mms offering but i'm sure someone said it was back now, either way they'll put it on. If the first person won't just ring back, took me two attempts by phone :)

For forwarding texts and a conventional SMS system (inbox, outbox sent and drafts etc) use iSMS. Also 3rd party apps give copy/paste functionality. So that aside it leaves the camera being a weak spot, potentially the battery life (try running a tomtom for 24 hours on a single charge) and the cost of the handset.

The crashing issue is normally the user directory privileges, again it's a one click fix with Boss Pref's taking all of 10 seconds, it normally happens in mail or safari from personal experience but others have reported other standard apps suffering. Once done i've not had a problem in weeks.

To be fair on paper my XDA Orbit is a better handset, and with custom rom's it was good but after a month of using the iphone I went back for a day and realised how basic it actually was even customised. The reality is the usability and integration of the iphone UI/apps is vastly superior. The OH doesn't want my old one so she's picking up her Omnia today but it'll take a lot to convince me to go back to WM.
