Why is it so crap! I was expecting an improvement from 3GS with the higher res but it's just as bad.

Are you watching them over WiFi or 3G. If it's 3G then your carrier compresses the video beyond recognition to save their bandwidth.

On WiFi i get high resolution video on mine.

Don't use the youtube app, that is crap quality.
Go to youtube on Safari and add that to your homescreen.

Do this and select the HQ button and all youtube videos over 3g are excellent quality. The Apple youtube app is useless

i updated to 4.0.2 before i realised i had

i plan to at 4.1 but linkng youtube.com works fine.

MiTube/MxTube can stream or download the HD versions, which are far better than HQ available via the youtube app or mobile site.
