Further my previous thread (thanks again for the replies), I've been looking at the iPhone 4 a bit more in depth.

Again, due to my astonishing lack of knowledge about phones, I didn't realise that the iPhone 4 uses a 'micro-sim' as opposed to a normal one - i.e. the one I currently have. Is it a massive chew on to keep my old number and import all my contacts? Will I end up phoneless for a day or two while it all sorts itself out? I've tried Googling but I get conflicting stories.

Thanks again.

If you are carrying the same contract over to the iPhone 4 you can either cut down the existing sim card to fit (plenty of guides online) or get a new micro sim replacement from the provider.

As for contacts you could either take them over on the sim or export them onto your pc or some online service (gmail) and then re import them onto the iPhone.

If it's a new contract you can request a pac code from from your existing provider if you are changing to a new one, I believe it takes around 4 days to transfer the number to a new network.

Ah right! Thanks for that.

I'd be staying with the same provider (Three), but if I didn't want to cut down my existing sim card, how long would it take for them to issue me a new micro sim that has my same phone number? Would it be the same four days approx?

On a side note, do HTD Desires etc use these micro sims? I'd never heard of them before!

Just go into a Three shop and ask for a micro sim. You should be able to call up customer service and they can port your number to a new sim within an hour or so.

That is if you manage to cope with Three's infamous call centres..

I also spoke to Three the other day and they said you can either cut it down yourself or they can provide a new Micro-Sim with adapter to make it into a regular sized sim-card if necessary :)

I'm with Orange but I actually did it at the Apple Store there and then - they had a load of sealed, spare microSIMs and I just rang up and asked for a SIM swap.

Easy peasy, was ready to go within the hour.

Good option there^

Depending on the phone you have currently, hopefully its not too primitive, you can copy the SIM contacts to the old-phone memory,
put the micro-SIM in adapter (you may need a small bit of stickytape to hold the sim in the adapter and stop it falling out depending on the sim tray/mechanism in the phone),
put micro-SIM/adapter into old phone,
copy contacts to micro-SIM/adapter,
remove micro-SIM from adapter and bung into iPhone.

On the iPhone goto Settings > Mail Contacts and Calendar > Scroll down to Import contacts from SIM card

:)

Fantastic, all sounds pretty easy. I'm in town tomorrow anyway so I'll pop in the Three store and have a gander. Watch me end up with a different phone after all this!
