AIR is a flash variant I believe. Lets hope that its not like flash in that it is actually optimized for OS X.

I actually think its to do with the way the app downscales the video, to a smaller size rez. Running the video at full screen looks almost identical to website flash player version.

I'm sure it will be a matter of time before the video quality gets better as the Beeb seem pretty keen to get it right and to make sure that everyone is eventually happy.
