iPod - Firewire?

Just plugged my 60gb Video iPod into the £15 firewire cable and it said

Firewire connections are not supported

. Is there a firmware update or am I stuck using USB ?

Why?

I got the USB/Firewire combi cable as I needed an extra cable - it was 7p cheaper than the USB only cable.
Teaches me to read up / google even when buying a cable
