iPod/iTunes - encode in mp3 and which bitrate?

320. I'd use flac but my ipod doesn't like it. I can't tell the difference between 320 mp3 and flac so I don't lose sleep

If possible I'll go for 320kbps. Most of my music is 192kbps though. 128kbps has a noticeable difference in quality from 192/320 when played from my PC speakers. I use MP3 for everything, don't think I have anything in any other formats.

I struggle to tell the difference between 192Kbps MP3 and the CD, although I can in certain instances. 128Kbps to me sounds terrible, it's so flat and sounds like warbling.

I couldn't tell the difference on my Creative inspire 5700s. The dolby decoder in them packed up so I changed to my Sony stereo amp, with both Sony and B&W speakers. Suddenly all my 192kb/s mp3s sound somewhat lacking.

Have also been reminded how pap the amp on my speedlink medusas is. Aside from picking up RF and EM interferance, music through it sounds really harsh. Plugged the same headphones into the Sony amp, stuck the headphones in Stereo mode and they suddenly sound half decent for music! Clear as day too, with no interference.

I've not experimented with bitrates yesterday but with a decent soundsystem, it suddently seems worth looking at higher bitrates or lossless.

i love it when people slate "anything less than 320k". because 9 times out of ten its damn impossible to tell the difference in a blind test at say...256k. or 228k. a well encoded mp3 will be virtually transparent and you're going to need to spend a great deal of money to tell the difference. thats not to say i dont rip in lossless, because i do. but people either like to overstate the differences or really dont have their encoders set up correctly
