Hi,
I have iTunes installed on a system that's on it's way out. I haven't accessed iTunes in ages. The old system also would need a little fiddling to get it running.

I want to switch my iPod to a new computer. Can I do that without doing anything on the old computer? Will the new installation wipe my iPod? I can't remember how it works. (There is just ripped CD music on it btw... nothing that needs license aquisition)

Wish they didn't make it so complicated. It's just an MP3 player for goodness sake :p

Thanks

moving your ipod to the new machine will prompt to erase before it will sync.

so youll need to re-import your music into itunes (i find the library XML file and edit the paths within using wordpad and replace all if necessary) then erase and sync.

Ok thanks. So I'll need to see about reviving the old computer (I don't have copies of the MP3's any where else (except on the iPod of course))... arg. I'll have a look at the XML editing to make it a little faster.

There should be a less tedious method to switch it to another computer (using passwords or something) that also disables all content on the other computer that's already on the iPod.

fraid not, its all DRM related..

you can get a reverse sync program off t'internet to copy the files off the ipod but most arent free and i found tend to screw up any folder sorting structures you have etc.

Reverse sync would be nice if I didn't have to buy software just for this one task. And I wouldn't want to use a possibly dodgy free one. None of my content is even drm... just converted from old CD's...

Only reason I bother is because the iPod connects directly to my car stereo.

Cheers

ed: Something like MediaWidget looks like it would be a nice app for managing iPod (and not use iTunes at all), but not sure if I want to bother buying it. Anyone know what the trial limitations are? Couldn't find any description of those.
