Hello!

Several years ago I bought an iPod Nano 4th Generation for my partner for Christmas. After using it for a short time it's been left unused. Fast forward to last weekend and - for some reason - she decided she wanted to use it. Unfortunately the device no longer function correctly... It's fine when connected to the charger however *immediately* after disconnecting the charger the device dies.

My initial impression was a faulty/dead battery but I guess it could be the charging circuitry. I've no previous experience with iPods but did put it in the diagnostic mode (while connected to the charger) and everything seemed okay apart from one 'Power' test which immediately caused the device to die. My thought is that this would have been a test of battery capacity (or similar) and it had to internally disconnect the charger in order to assess the battery and, of course, the device dies immediately without the charger as a power source!

Despite the device being very old (and my partner now having a phone which would do what the iPod does and more) she is very keen to have it fixed because it was a gift and more so because I had it engraved at the time. Apple want a significant amount of money so I'm looking at finding a cheaper place... Lots of places online do battery changes but I'd prefer it if they could check (or I could first verify) that it is the battery at fault and I won't be sinking money into this for nothing.

So, any recommendations?

I did consider doing the repair myself but it looks very fiddly and I'd be concerned about causing further damage (especially so given she seems so fond of the device and keen to keep it).

Thank you! :)

Got any local repair places that could look at it? There are normally a few phone repair shops that do screen replacements etc that should be able to fix it.

If not, then just do it yourself! The tools are dirt cheap, and as long as you carefully follow a guide it should be fine. Sure it will be fiddly, but it's a learning experience.
