Ipod nano faulty? please help

Hi

I have an ipod nano 8gb. when i connect it to the imac it will show my songs and it will only stay connected for about 30 seconds before it disconnects itself.

when i turn on the ipod it says i havent put any music on the ipod at all

anybody knows whats wrong? rights it just a 8gb external hard drive

Have you tried rebooting it?

press the centre button and the menu button down at the same time. hold them down until it reboots.
