iPod not being detected

Was lucky enough to be given a family friends old iPod a few days ago, only problem is it doesn't seem to be being recognised via the FireWire.

I've tested it on my XP PC and my friends MacBook Pro - it charges fine on both, but doesn't appear on either in iTunes or just as an external hard drive.

I've tried soft resetting and don't really know what else to do :confused:

What iPod is it? Some don't work with Firewire iirc.

Cheers - it's an iPod Classic (80GB). Seems it's USB only! God knows why it was given away with a FireWire then, maybe a mistake.
