hi does anyone know of anywere that repairs an ipod. mine has just stopped working and is displaying the sad hard drive icon. everywere website ive looked at so far is over a £100 to repair.

cheers

sad hard drive icon?

It will either be displaying the unhappy ipod icon, or the folder with the exclamation mark over it. Sounds likely that your drive is dead or dying though, in which case a £100 repair isn't too bad for warranted new parts.

You could grab yourself a disk off the auction site and fit it yourself however, its not hard to do.

Have you tried taking a ipod apart?!?

To get it apart without damaging the screen, or screen is nye on impossible, why do you think Apple provide replacements when yours is faulty instead of repairing, it takes so long to do a repair to a good job.

You might want to look at apple's website, they can sell you refurbished units for a mighty discount

its the unhappy drive icon thats being displayed and it just clicks. id rather buy a new one than pay over a £100 to get it repaired.

has anyone ever replaced the hard drive, if so how much did it cost and was it easyish to do

Yes, i've taken apart 3 so far, its simple. Infact, i'm probably doing an iPod photo next week sometime, drive replacement.

cool, where do you get the drives from. how much do they cost ect ect

As I said in my other post, I generally get parts from "the auction site". They are between £25-35 for a 20GB drive usually

Yeah, they are all much of a muchness, just 1.8" drives, although i'd only go for the same capacity or lower, not higher. Getting the case off is the trickiest part, but you can slide a thin scalple blade or similar inbetween the back plate and the front to help you ease it off.

My last two ipods have been < £60 in total each (20GB 3rd gen, and a 30gb photo). I usually get a "faulty" one and repair it.

How good are the 30gb ones for jogging..I know they use Hard Drives but just wondering if they skip a lot, and if jogging would damage the internals? Or am I best off getting the Nano, even if its only 4gb?

(Just found the refurbished lot ;))
