iPod showing music by folder

I wish I could somehow display my music by folder on my iPod, so that it matches how I have things in iTunes.

Is this possible at all?

e.g. I would have a folder called Music, a subfolder of say HipHop and another of the artist name. Then, using the wheel I could navigate to the folder and drill down.

Or are there any hacks that do this?

Thanks,

Jon

Er, surely you just navigate with:

Menu > Genre (hip-hop) > Artist (ArtistName/AllArtists) > Album (AlbumName/AllAlbums) > select first song

Assuming you have all your music's ID3 tags done correctly, then this is by far the easiest way of doing what you want.

Indeed.

Catalogue your music properly and your iPod will display it in any format you want.

What do you mean by catalogue my music properly?
Have your library set up properly with all the correct information for every track and album, that way browsing by genre, album, artist or even track name is so mind-numbingly easy you don't even need to think about it.

So am I correct in thinking you cannot do subfolders?

You can't do "folders" full stop, even in iTunes, so not really sure what you are meaning in regards to your folders in iTunes.

You can do playlists, or media sorted by any combination of the following:

Artist
Album
Song
Genre

Taking this as your example:

You have your entire iPod (call that the "Music" Folder), your "sub-folder" (with name of HipHop) would actually be the GENRE you assign to those particular tracks/artists/albums.

So on your iPod, you can do the following:

Menu > Music > Genre (Select HipHop) > Artist (Select ANY HipHop Atrist) > Album (Select ANY Album from previously selected Artist) > Song (Any Song from previously selected Album).

This is EXACTLY what you are trying to achieve, all you need to do is make sure in iTunes, the music is correctly sorted into Genre / Album / Artist.

EDIT: With regard to your audiobooks, I just give those the Genre of AudioBook, the book name as the Album, and the track name as the chapter.

At least that is how I have the Hitchikers Guide on my iPod.

Example of a well-organized library:

Thanks for the explanation.

In iTunes, if you go to File, there is an option for New Folder. I categorise all my stuff in folders e.g. business, health, comedy etc. This is more logical to me because I am used to doing the same with Windows Explorer and my filing cabinet. :)
