I'm back baby!
Our lass has bought a second-hand iPod that isn't working properly. Before sending it back I want to make sure a simple update won't fix the problem.

It's a 1Gb shuffle. The little light comes on when it is connected to the lappy via USB, the iPod itself works OK and plays music.

I can't browse it via explorer though it appears in the list of drives with the right name, and I when I try I get an I/O error.

Unfortunately I don't know what iTunes looks like with an iPod attached!

Anything I can do?

It should appear in the Devices menu on the left side of iTunes - that's the only place you can manage the contents from.

It actually isn't picking the iPod up. Edit > Preferences > iPod tab - 'no iPod connected'

iPod completely bust?

I don't know if it's possible with the shuffle, but can you do a reset by holding down the play and centre button? Or does the shuffle even have a centre button?!

There must be a way of resetting it, perhaps the previous owner had it set to Mac configuration and you can't pick it up on a Windows PC or vice versa.

Possibly. The centre buton is a play button on the shuffle, but I'll scout around and see if there's any other way (or, god forbid, refer to the destructions!)

The problem I envisage is that the unit sees it is connected to a USB port (it is charging) but the laptop doesn't see the unit past adding a drive in My Computer.

The really annoying thing is that it recognises that it is connected to a USB port, and it plays music fine. I just can't get new music on it.
