IPod Shuffle PLEASE HELP

Hi Folks
Trying to connect a brand new 2nd generation 1gb shuffle to itunes vista home premium. Registered the ipod fine etc in itunes.
As soon as I plug it in its shows up as a drive in My Computer removable storage but as soon as itunes automatically starts, it disconnects the drive out of removable storage so is no longer accessible. It still shows up in itunes as a device but vista has disconnected it. Please help as this was a present for my daughter and she's understandably miffed as I can't get it working.
I have a 80gb ipod and ipod nano which work fine

I don't have the Windows version of iTunes, but in Mac OS X, there is this option:

When I try that, although the shuffle settings are showing within itunes, when you change to disk use you get an error message saying the disc cannot be found. This is because as I tunes starts up windows ejects the disc from removable drives. It does not do this with my classic or nano.
